Answer engine

Definition

An answer engine is any system that responds to an information need with a direct, synthesized answer rather than only a ranked list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot, and Claude qualify — as do voice assistants when they speak a single resolved answer.

Answer engine

The category behind GEO and AEO

Every GEO and AEO tactic ultimately targets the same object: answer engines that decide which brands to name and which sources to cite. The category is broader than “ChatGPT” — it includes Google’s generative layers, Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, and regional surfaces buyers actually use. Strategy that optimizes for one engine alone leaves exposure on the table.

How answer engines differ from search engines

A classic search engine returns URLs; the user chooses where to click. An answer engine returns prose (plus optional links) and often ends the journey. Retrieval, grounding, safety filters, and training cutoffs differ by product — so the “best” source for Perplexity may be ignored by Gemini. Multi-engine measurement is baseline hygiene, not premium analytics.

In Asian markets

Engine mix is not US-default. Buyer research in Singapore may skew Perplexity and ChatGPT; Japan still routes significant query volume through Yahoo! Japan and Google with different generative rollout; Korea has Naver’s AI-assisted features. Model market share varies by country — a visibility program must track the engines your market uses, not the ones trending on US marketing Twitter.

Example

A brand tracks visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode from Singapore residential IPs. It discovers strong Perplexity citations but near-zero Google AI Mode mentions — prompting localized FAQ work and Google-focused structured data rather than more Reddit threads alone.
