AI Overview

Definition
An AI Overview is a Google Search feature that displays an AI-generated summary above traditional organic results, synthesizing answers from indexed sources and often including inline citations. It turns the SERP into a hybrid of generative answer and link list — and frequently satisfies the query without a click.

What changed on the SERP
Before AI Overviews, winning a query meant earning position one. Now the SERP can show a synthesized paragraph — product names, pros and cons, steps — above the blue links. The user may get a complete answer from the overview alone. For brands, this means SERP ownership and answer ownership diverged: you can rank #1 organically and still lose the narrative if the overview names competitors and cites their sources instead of yours.
How AI Overviews differ from Google AI Mode and ChatGPT
Google AI Mode is a conversational search surface; AI Overviews are embedded in the classic results page. ChatGPT and Perplexity are separate products with separate retrieval stacks. Optimizing for one does not guarantee visibility in another — each has different citation behavior, rollout timing, and language coverage. SGE was Google’s experimental name for this capability before AI Overviews became the product label.
In Asian markets
AI Overviews did not roll out uniformly. Availability, language support, and trigger rate vary by country — which means a Singapore dashboard can show overviews on categories where Jakarta or Osaka still return classic results. Brands measuring only US VPN traffic systematically misread their Asian exposure. Residential-IP sampling per market is the only way to know whether your category triggers an overview locally, not whether it triggers one in California.
Example
A hotel brand ranks #1 for “best boutique hotel Singapore” but the AI Overview recommends three competitors drawn from listicle domains. Fixing that requires GEO work on the sources Google’s summarizer trusts — not only on-page SEO for the ranked URL.
